Why Live in High Halden?
High Halden is a village set around its historic village green. The Chequers On the Green pub is a thriving modern pub that was once a haunt for the notorious Hawkhurst and Cranbrook smuggling gangs of the 1700s . The building dates from 1442 , and part of its structure is from ancient ships timbers recovered from former galleons. The other side of the green is the primary school and the 12th century church of St Mary which has a unique tower constructed from massive oak timbers. The church stands high on the edge of a rolling escarpment down to Woodchurch. This is a view across the Weald to Romney Marsh, but in early medieval times it would have been a view to the port villages along the shore before the marsh was reclaimed. The rising ground of High Halden made it one of the well located villages in this part of Kent to be chosen to have an Advanced Landing Ground temporary runway when the Liberation of Europe was being planned at the end of WW2.
In recent years High Halden has expanded either side of the A28 with the historic village houses and businesses added to by modern housing with great views over the surrounding farmland from its ridge top location.
