Biddenden is a picturesque village in the Weald of Kent, surrounded by rolling farmland and woodland. It is 4 miles south of Headcorn, for trains to Tonbridge and London or Tunbridge Wells. There is a bus service to Tenterden and to Maidstone. It is close Sissinghurst Castle and garden made famous by Vita Sackville West, now run by the National Trust.
Why Live in Biddenden?
It was once the centre of the Wealden iron industry. Iron stone was mined from the local clay and smelted with locally made charcoal from the Wealden forest, an industry started at scale by the Romans, it produced cannon balls for English battles and iron railings for St Paul's Cathedral. The village sign celebrates the Maids of Biddenden, conjoined twins born in 1100, in in whose name a perpetual charity provided Easter and Christmas gifts and Biddenden cake to pensioners and widows.
Today it is the centre of a thriving Kent produce industry including Biddenden Vineyards who press locally grown apple juice, alongside wine and cider making. There are ample community facilities with an old and a new village hall, primary school and a millennium field, and regular village events. All Saints church holds regular services and the annual flower festival and fete. As well as local shops there is the notable West House restaurant. As a popular tourist destination close to Sissinghurst Castle there are a number of holiday cottage and venue businesses in the area.
